GLUTATHIONE
A Powerful Antioxidant for Detox, Immunity, and Healthy Aging
L-Glutathione, often referred to as glutathione, is a potent antioxidant made up of the amino acids cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. It plays a crucial role in mitochondrial function and DNA production and is essential for maintaining healthy immune function, metabolism, tissue repair, and the formation of sperm cells. One of its most significant properties is its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, enabling it to detoxify the brain and cells by removing harmful substances, such as mercury. Glutathione is also key in neutralizing free radicals that cause oxidative stress, leading to cell damage and contributing to aging and degenerative diseases.
Although glutathione is produced naturally in the liver, its levels can decline with age, stress, malnutrition, or exposure to environmental toxins. It is also found in foods like spinach and avocados, but is poorly absorbed when consumed orally. To support glutathione production, supplements such as curcumin, N-acetylcysteine, selenium, silymarin, and vitamins C and E can be beneficial. Glutathione supplementation is often used to improve immune response, detoxify the body, activate enzymes, aid liver function, reduce fat accumulation in the belly, and enhance skin complexion.
